Spot and stalk rifle hunting is the norm. Due to the limited visibility, with dense bush, tall grass, and acacia trees, you will need to test your hunting skills. Shots can range from 20 to 150 yards. However, with the help of a seasoned Professional Hunter and good shot placement, you will succeed.
Bring a few sets of camouflage shirts and comfortable shoes/boots suitable for hunting in the bushveld. Pack warm clothing, including a thick jacket, gloves, and a beanie if you plan to visit during June through August. Always have sunblock on hand, a hat and bring your binoculars and personal camera/cell phone.
You can bring your own rifle to South Africa, and we will help you through the process. There are some exceptions to what firearms you can bring, but again we will help you through that process. If you choose, you can rent firearms from us, so you won’t need to worry about documentation and paperwork needed to import firearms.
The best time for rifle hunting is during the dry season (March through October), while bow hunting is recommended during June through September, it is recommended to avoid full moon bookings. Permanent blinds over waterholes are the primary means for bow hunting. It is essential to note that the anatomy of South African animals differs from North American animals, making shot placement critical to a successful hunt. To this end, Bow Hunt South Africa recommends acquiring "The Perfect Shot: Mini Edition for Africa" by Kevin Robertson, available from various retailers.
For hunting plains game, it's recommended to use a caliber within the range of .243, .270, .308, or any of the .300 Magnum calibers.
For hunting dangerous game, a minimum caliber of .375 H&H with well-constructed bullets is required, and ABS recommends using Barns X 300gr or higher.
